My brother is rather fond of what we call "Willy Hill" wines. Being a devoted fan, he brought a bottle of the Napa chardonnay to the yearly family lobster feed we host at my house. Dinner was already running 45 minutes late, as is always the case when I'm cooking 20 lobsters with mussels, corn and sausages in a houseful of people who "help" by keeping my wine glass full (sometimes it takes a tag team of three to keep up). |

Mirassou is another blast from the past years of my hospitality career. I began bartending on the day of my 18th birthday and reasonably soon thereafter discovered wine could be something more than the stuff you hold your breath to swallow at the holiday dinner table. |

I love Wolf Blass wines. I was introduced to them 15 years ago by a chef who went by the name Wolf, and I supposed it was his version of ego talking when he recommended the label. Delightfully, he was right to recommend it, and two or three of their offerings instantly went on our wine list. |

I spotlighted a red wine from Heron several weeks ago in this column, then had the chance to taste their chardonnay with a friend recently. As is the case with the merlot, the chardonnay displays quality, balance and finesse well beyond its price tag. |
