Moreno Films, 1981
starring: Clint Howard, Joseph Cortese, Don Stark and Charles Tyner
directed by: Eric Weston
the plot: Stanley Coopersmith
(Howard) just can’t get a break. A cadet at a prestigious military
academy in California, Stanley is clumsy, shy, passive and
unathletic—everything a young cadet shouldn’t be. It’s bad enough that
his fellow cadet, Bubba (Stark) bullies Stanley every day, but even the
adults get in on the act. The cruel Colonel Kincaid (Tyner) doesn’t let
a day go by without informing Stanley of how awful a cadet he is, and
even the Reverend Jameson (Cortese) harasses Stanley, forcing him to
clean out the ancient, junk-filled basement of the school’s chapel.
But, Stanley makes a chilling discovery in the basement—a book of the
writings of Esteban, a mad monk from the 16th century who performed
horrible Satanic rituals on the very spot where the chapel stands.
Stanley, who makes up for his lack of social graces with his sharp
intellect, sets about translating the book with the help of a stolen
computer.

Universal Pictures, 1983
starring: Phoebe Cates, Matthew Modine, Fran Ryan and Betsy Russell
directed by: Noel Black
the plot: At an exclusive
all girl’s private school, the students spend as much time studying
anatomy as they do studying everything else. Among them is Christine
(Cates), a demure girl who loves her boyfriend, Jim (Modine), but isn’t
sure she wants to go all the way with him. The source of her doubt is
Jordan Leigh-Jenson (Russell), a snobby rich girl with her eyes—and
hands—all over Jim whenever Christine isn’t around. Meanwhile,
Christine’s friend Betsy (Kathleen Wilhoite) tries to rein in Bubba
(Michael Zorek), Jim’s best friend and an inveterate horn-dog who’ll
stop at nothing to catch a glimpse of a naked woman. While Jordan and
Christine fight over Jim and Betsy and Bubba canoodle all over campus,
they all find they must contend with Miss Dutchbok (Russell), the
school’s prim and proper headmistress, who believes sexy shenanigans
are no laughing matter.

Empire Pictures, 1986
starring: Jeffrey Combs, Barbara Crampton, Ken Foree and Ted Sorel
directed by: Stuart Gordon
the plot: In the attic of a stately old mansion, Dr.
Edward Pretorious (Sorel) and his assistant Crawford Tillinghast
(Combs) have invented a resonator that stimulates the pineal gland. As
Pretorious soon reveals to Tillinghast, using the resonator to activate
the pineal gland allows humans to peer into another dimension—and
allows the creatures that dwell in that dimension to see humans.
Something unspeakable emerges from the mysterious dimension and snaps
off Pretorious’ head, a mishap that leaves Tillinghast insane and
facing a murder charge. The only person who believes Tillinghast’s
story is Dr. Katherine McMichaels (Crampton), who plucks the slightly
psychotic scientist from the loony bin and convinces him to recreate
Pretorious’ experiment.

directed by: Andrew Leman
the plot: As Professor
George Angell (Lucas) takes his last breaths, his grand-nephew (Foyer)

As he pores over his uncle’s notes, the young man reads of Inspector
Legrasse (Mersault), a New Orleans cop who captured a number of
cultists during a raid in the Louisiana swamps in 1908. Piecing
together disparate pieces of information, the young man learns of a
horrifying conspiracy by the cultists to raise dread Cthulhu from his
dreamless sleep in the depths of the ocean and allow him to lay waste
to the world. The last piece of the puzzle concerns an ocean freighter
whose crew disappeared, save for one man, Johansen (O’Day).
