a family trip to Connecticut for three days of music
We
got home late Sunday night, broke and dirty, from the 12th annual
Gathering of the Vibes in Bridgeport, Conn. I had never been before,
but have been on a mission the last couple of years to expose my
children—15-year-old Spence and 11-year-old Grace—to as wide a variety
of musical styles as I can while they are still willing to accompany me
to shows. Since I try to take them on at least one camping trip every
summer, I chose the Vibes as this year’s destination. I got my money’s
worth at this festival—the kids were definitely exposed to a lot of
music.

Zappa plays Zappa at the Ballroom
Appearing on a large screen above the rear entrance to the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom, the late Frank Zappa sang the familiar lyrics to his classic song “Montana,” off the “Overnite Sensation” album.
“I might be movin’ to Montana soon, just to raise me up a crop of … dental floss,” Zappa crooned through his iconic mustache. at Lotus Rising Dance Studio in the Salmon Falls Mills in Rollinsford on Friday, June 22
Last
Friday evening, Lotus Rising Dance Studio was the setting for another
in a series of music performances presented by Avant Coast, a local
organization dedicated to the promotion of creative improvised music.
Featured performers included saxophonists Richard Gardzina, Thom Keith
and Matt Langley, drummers Rob Duquette and Luther Gray, and bassist
Tim Webb. Calling the concert “Out of Boundaries,” these six musicians
took the small but very enthusiastic audience on a two-and-a-half hour
sonic joy ride through the many twists and turns of improvised music.

Fireflies
winked and flickered over the grassy meadow outside the Mill Pond
Center in Durham as banjos, fiddles and guitars saturated the twilight.
A stack of amps rested beneath the branches of a large oak tree, while
spotlights illuminated the five musicians on the porch, which had been
transformed into a spacious stage. Some audience members danced
exultantly in an adjacent field, joining hands to traipse barefoot
across the grass or executing spontaneous cartwheels.

Watching the audience at a Ween show is every bit as interesting as
watching the band itself. Punk rock Mohawks and hippy dreadlocks are
seen in near equal numbers, and fans in various stages of inebriation
stare sedately at the stage or dance like spastic reptiles on fire.
