“Hello, we’re The Queers from Portsmouth, New Hampshire!”
Something about hearing Joe King spit those words in the microphone at
a show makes me feel good inside —especially when they’re spoken at
home. King and his legendary punk band were in Newmarket for a quick
stop at The Stone Church as part of their worldwide, whirlwind 2005
tour.

Last Sunday’s packed all-ages rock extravaganza at The Dover Brick
House included some solid local acts. I have to admit that I was
pleasantly surprised and impressed. The Minus Scale, This Wretched
Vessel, Good Samaritan and Too Late The Hero filled the bill for the
latest installment of the all-ages One Head in the Oven music series
put on by local promoter Sparky.

Downstairs at The Press Room isn’t exactly a prime “listening room”
setting, but that’s OK. The cheery, chatty crowds that frequent the
place give the warm pub its charm. Local songstress Liz Parmalee and
Boston resident Jennifer Greer braved the noise and won over a good
many of the patrons last Thursday night with their music, despite the
beery crowd.

Fans of Americana had a chance to enjoy a bill of acoustic harmonies,
folksy storytelling and good old-fashioned sturm-und-twang when
Brooklyn, N.Y., duo Royal Pine and Tennessee-based The Everybodyfields
paired up at The Stone Church last week.
