Dover’s Barley Pub is stocked with craft beers in fine variety, but
doesn’t usually offer mountain moonshine. Last Thursday, though, the
Brian McGee band brought in some genuine musical firewater, playing two
generous sets of rootsy and rough old-time, country, blues and
bluegrass.

Ryan Montbleau, a talented singer/songwriter/guitarist, recently
performed a series of solo shows at The Barley Pub, part of the venue’s
Tuesday residency series. Through the encouragement of a good friend,
and to satisfy my curiosity, I caught snippets of Montbleau’s first
couple of performances before catching two sets on the last night of
his run.

Blues rock is not dead. To the contrary, it’s very much alive in the
capable hands of artists such as Kenny Wayne Shepherd. A blues guitar
prodigy (he completed his first record, “Ledbetter Heights,” while
still in high school), Shepherd sustains a style of music which is all
too often shunned by mainstream media. Although many classic rock and
blues acts are still active (Aerosmith, BB King, Buddy Guy, Johnny
Winter, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Rolling Stones, to name a few) or appear
reinvented (Robert Plant), the lack of newer acts from the same mold
have caused fans of the Golden Age of rock to tremble with uncertainty
about the future of … well, everything.

With a name like Melvern Taylor, a band called the Fabulous Meltones, and a voice as smooth, airy and rounded as a tropical breeze, it’s hard to resist using words like mellifluous, mellow and meltingly beautiful to describe the suite of songs Taylor introduced to a welcoming audience at the Press Room on July 19. |
