one nation under the gun | Print |  E-mail

Brian Azzarello is not a pessimist, though you’d certainly get that impression from reading his work. Comics like “100 Bullets” and his new Western series “Loveless” (both published by DC Comics/Vertigo) are grittier than sandpaper and full of vicious violence, voluptuous vixens and very, very bad men. Despite this, Azzarello says he’s not a pessimist, and while he certainly sounds cheerful in conversation, he has a taste for the darker aspects of humanity. The Wire caught up with Azzarello on the phone on a recent Friday afternoon to discuss “Loveless,” “100 Bullets” and the one attitude that persists throughout history.

Ah, August, the dead-zone of summer. It’s a slow time of year for everything, especially comics. This year is no exception. The big summer events promised by Marvel and DC have sort of petered out—Marvel’s “House of M” crossover is lackluster and disappointing, and DC’s “Infinite Crisis” storyline doesn’t actually kick into gear until September. Go into just about any bookstore from May through August and you're sure to find a table full of "summer reads" that fall into one of two categories. There's the "classics," books you've never read but probably should have, and there are the rolling mounds of cheap paperbacks by John Grisham, Danielle Steele and the usual "beach read" authors. Sometimes, neither option is appealing-"Catch 22" isn't exactly lighthearted summer fare, and there's a limit to how many tales of plucky young attorneys/ detectives/ heiresses one can read. There's a third option, though, one that's far more unique, entertaining and currently in vogue-comics.

Comic book movies are a certifiable genre now. Anyone who believes big-screen adaptations of Batman and company are a passing trend hasn't been looking closely enough at the box office numbers from the last couple of decades. Because superheroes dominate the world of comic books, moviegoers have thus far been treated to a steady diet of capes and tights, with films like Sin City and American Splendor being notable exceptions.

The annual summer crossover season. It's a delirious, heady time; collectors scramble to snap up all the relevant parts of the story, fans debate the minutiae of various plot points, and new readers, wandering into a comic shop for the first time, are usually lost without a map.
