Bands, as a rule, do not like to be
categorized. This is largely due to the egotistical nature of the
musicians, who cringe at the thought of being boxed in with any of
their contemporaries. Most band members prefer to think that their
music is far too unique and original to fit into any existing genre.
Therefore, a growing number of bands label their sound as
“unclassifiable” and proudly refer to themselves as “genre-benders.”

High Heat & Chin Music
Red Fez Records
What do you get when you take three wildly talented musicians, each
equipped with a penchant for zany artistry, supply them with
instruments and make them play together for 10 years?
Dreadnaught, that’s what.
After a decade of touring, performing and recording together,
the trio has released an ambitious double-disc collection of songs,
meticulously selected from the band’s previous five albums, along with
a handful of new studio cuts. The 28 total tracks on the band’s latest
two-disc release, “High Heat & Chin Music,” showcase the diversity
of Dreadnaught’s arsenal, the depth of the band’s instrumental skills
and the general oddness of the group’s members.

Holy shit.
Those are the first two words that come to mind when you hear
about the extraordinary accomplishments of Moes Haven, the utterly
underground two-piece band that recorded 365 albums last year. At first
you question the band’s veracity, but what’s the fun in doubting? Most
remarkable of all, the music is actually good.

“Goliath, I’m on Your Side,” the follow-up to 2004’s “The Shining
Example Is Lying on the Floor,” which was recorded before Lindner moved

Music doesn’t always need to have a sustained pulse in order to give
the listener satisfaction. Such is the case with “Wind,” a
self-produced and released CD from Rye-based
flautist/singer/multi-instrumentalist Cynthia Chatis. This fine
recording is a collection of interesting, melodic pieces freely
improvised by Chatis on her varied flutes, bells and percussive
instruments and with her voice.
