Stone Church gets new curator, exhibit

Rochester artist Daryl-Ann Hurst has taken over as curator of the gallery at The Stone Church in Newmarket, and she’s kicked off her duties with a display of her own recent work, titled “Art in Small Places.”

Hurst has been exhibiting her work since 1978 and has had solo shows in Boston, Portsmouth, Rochester, Rollinsford, Lincoln, Littleton and St. Johnsbury, Vt. She’s also participated in several group shows around the country.

Her current exhibit, which shares its name with a blog she writes, features work on paper and larger canvases, with watercolors, oil pastels, acrylics and mixed media. “They are all based on hard-edged abstraction, but nod toward Cubism and more fluid abstract expressionism with some splatter,” she said in a press release.

The show will remain on display through February. Due up in March is an exhibit featuring artists from Bethlehem; Burlington, Vt.; and Berwick, Maine. Hurst plans to exhibit local and regional artists, both established and emerging.

An opening reception will take place on Saturday, Jan. 21, from 5 to 7 p.m., at The Stone Church, 5 Granite St., Newmarket, 603-659-7700.
