Different perspectives at Lucy's
Two New England artists will fill Lucy’s Art Emporium in Dover with their visions through Oct. 3. Andy Mellen and Sylvea Johnson see the world in different ways.
Johnson, of Portsmouth, looks inward to create mindscapes from vibrantly colored mixed media. She has referred to her pieces as “visual riddles,” which at first seem abstract but have hidden shapes and meaning.
Mellen uses a toy film camera to capture scenes of a dilapidated neighborhood through different lenses. Each of four shots is just a bit different, causing horizon lines to shift and leaving the viewer feeling like they are moving through the scene. With a background in theater set design, he gives photos the feel of a still from an independent movie.
An opening reception with the artists will be held on Friday, Sept. 17, from 5 to 7 p.m. Lucy’s Art Emporium is at 303 Central Ave., Dover, 603-740-9195.
