The Music Hall and Strawbery Banke Museum, two of Portsmouth’s most prominent cultural venues, are pairing up to double their appeal to potential visitors.
In a program called “A Vintage Christmas in Portsmouth,” the two are promoting their holiday fare as a multi-site celebration of classic holiday traditions. Visitors can enjoy the 27th annual Candlelight Stroll through holidays past at the 10-acre, living history Strawbery Banke Musuem, dine harborside in the heart of downtown, and then enjoy shows such as “The Nutcracker” at the city’s Victorian-era theater.
The Candlelight Stroll, which runs weekends through Dec. 17, derives its name from the hundreds of candles lighting the paths of the museum of neighborhood homes.
The historic houses are adorned in period-appropriate holiday finery of live greens and dried flowers, costumed role players demonstrate traditions of times past, and a roster of musicians and performers provides entertainment for all ages.
On weekdays in between the Stroll, the museum offers Holiday House Tours from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the hour. The tours present the evolution of mid-winter and Christmas traditions over three centuries, ending with hearth cooking and hot cider at the Wheelwright House. At The Music Hall, Ballet New England presents their traditional “An 1836 Portsmouth Nutcracker,” Thursday, Dec. 14 through Saturday, Dec. 16. On Saturday, Dec. 9, the hall will reverberate with “A Celtic Yuletide” with Riverdance tenor Michael Londra, a full band and Irish dancers, and the New Hampshire Symphony Orchestra offers a “Holiday Pops” concert on Sunday, Dec. 17.
