A new season of Harbor Light Stage’s Bold Face Play Reading Series begins on Monday, Sept. 8, with a reading of Michael Healey’s “The Drawer Boy.” The reading will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the Kittery Art Association gallery at 8 Coleman Ave., Kittery Point, Maine. Tickets are $10.
Started in September 2006, the Bold Face series presents readings of new and recent plays by nationally known playwrights and local talents, performed by regional actors. The program came into being after director Kent Stephens founded Harbor Light in May 2006. He partnered with the Kittery Art Association to bring live theater events to audiences in southern Maine.
“The Drawer Boy” follows a young actor named Miles who moves in with two middle-aged Canadian farmers to work on a play about country life. One of the farmers, Angus, suffered a head injury in World War II so traumatic that the other, Morgan, must reintroduce himself every morning. Oddly, Angus remembers Miles, and the story behind his friendship with Morgan gradually unfolds.
The Bold Face series will continue at the Kittery Art Association gallery with Monday night readings of David Lindsay-Abaire’s “Kimberly Akimbo” on Sept. 29, Lisa Kron’s “Well” on Nov. 10 and “The Ragpicker’s Dream” on Dec. 8. A bonus reading of “The Ragpicker’s Dream will take place at The Pearl in Portsmouth on Tuesday, Dec. 9.
Also on the horizon is Harbor Light’s next Main Stage production, a set of three plays collectively called “Three Viewings,” by Jeffrey Hatcher. The dramatic comedies include “Tell-Tale,” “Thief of Tears” and “13 Things about Ed Carpolotti.” The plays will be staged in the ceremonial room of St. Aspinquid Masonic Lodge at 101 Long Sands Road in York, Maine, from Oct. 17 to Nov. 2.
