The Wells Reserve and York County Audubon have again teamed up for their eighth annual bird seed fund raiser, which offers a discount to buyers and benefits the education programs of both organizations. The premium-quality seed, which is fresh from the 2006 crop, is supplied by Quinney’s Feed and Seed, a division of Blue Seal.
Pick up a bird seed order form at the Wells Reserve visitor center, call 207-646-1555 to have one mailed, or download it at www.wellsreserve.org. Orders placed before Nov. 1 get the greatest discount.
Seed can be picked up at the Wells Reserve, 342 Laudholm Farm Road, on Nov. 17, 18, or 19. Feeders and other accessories from Wild Birds Unlimited will be available for sale at the pickup spot. You can also buy a feeder at the pickup spot. Enclosed feeders are popular because they’ll store several days’ supply at one time. However, different types of birds like to feed in different ways. For example, some birds, the best feeder is the ground itself.
The Web site www.birdwatching.com offers some tips: to attract sparrows, juncos, doves and bobwhites, simply scatter the seed on the ground, a tree stump or a knee-high table; other birds flock to a raised feeder, such as a wooden platform, which can be placed on a short pole in the ground or hung from a second story porch; small hanging feeders that swing in the breeze are attractive to many small agile birds.
