Over 1,500 sick, injured and orphaned wild animals are brought to the York Center for Wildlife each year, from towns throughout Maine, New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts. Now is the time to meet these wild birds, mammals and reptiles. The Center, in Cape Neddick, will hold its 11th annual Open House on Sunday, Sept. 10, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event is free, though donations will be accepted.
Visitors to the open house will take self-guided tours of the facility, which includes 13 outdoor flight enclosures for songbirds and raptors, mammal enclosures, a state of the art waterfowl enclosure, and indoor diagnostic and treatment rooms, according to a press release. Current “residents” of the Center include great horned owls, barred owls, saw-whet owls, kestrels, merlins and a wide variety of songbirds, small mammals and reptiles.
In addition to the tours, the open house will offer live releases of rehabilitated birds, nature awareness games and demonstrations by White Pine Programs, animal stories by Shawn Middleton, face-painting, children’s games, food and a raffle, which features a Downeast clambake and other prizes.
The Center for Wildlife is located at 385 Mountain Road in Cape Neddick, just prior to the entrance to Mount Agamenticus. For more information, visit www.yorkcenterforwildlife.com or call 207-361-1400.
