On Monday, Nov. 5, China’s Chang’e 1 satellite successfully entered lunar orbit, only a month after Japan did the same with their own satellite, according to a recent Associated Press report.

Named after a Chinese goddess who flew to the moon, Chang’e 1 was launched with a Long March 3A rocket on Oct. 24 from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in Sichuan province in southwestern China. It is planned to remain in orbit around the moon for one year, the same as the Japanese satellite.

Long Jiang, deputy commander of spacecraft systems of China’s lunar exploration program, denied that there was any competition between the two countries, declaring in a press conference, “We are willing to cooperate with the rest of the world to the benefit of humankind, but as to what kind of cooperation, it depends on specific circumstances.”
India has plans to launch a similar probe in April 2008.
