debris defense

On Wednesday, May 30, Commander Fyodor Yurchikhin and Flight Engineer Oleg Kotov successfully installed Service Module Debris Protection (SMDP) panels onto the outside of the International Space Station as part of a 5 hour and 25 minute spacewalk.

More panels are scheduled to be installed on a June 6 spacewalk.

The LiftPort Group, founded four years ago to build a space elevator, seems to be about to go out of business, according to a recent post on slashdot.org. The company is both out of money and the state of Washington's Securities Division has charged the company with improper sale of stock.

The idea was to build a ribbon 100,000 km long, anchored to the Earth’s surface and with a counterweight in space, providing a permanent bridge to orbit. Elevator cars would climb the ribbon to deliver cargo and eventually people to orbit.

In a recent interview on National Public Radio, NASA chief Michael Griffin acknowledged a trend of global warming, but said that he was "not sure that it is fair to say that it is a problem we must wrestle with.”
NASA's top official on climate change expressed shock at Griffin’s comments in a later interview with NPR: “It was a shocking statement because of the level of ignorance it indicated with regard to the current situation.”
