A recently detected burst of radio waves has stumped scientists, who have never detected anything like it before, according to a recent Reuters report.

The extremely powerful burst was 5 milliseconds long and is estimated to have originated 3 billion light-years away.
“This burst represents an entirely new astronomical phenomenon,” said Matthew Bailes of Swinburne University in Australia.
The burst is thought to have been caused by a major astronomical event, such as the collision of two neutron stars.

On Thursday, September 27, NASA's Dawn spacecraft launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. The craft will now undertake an eight-year journey to the asteroids Vesta and Ceres in the asteroid belt.

The mission is unique in that the craft will go into orbit around one body, then pull away and go into orbit around the second body using its ion engines.

“To me, this feels like the first real interplanetary spaceship,” said Marc Rayman, chief engineer, in a recent AP report. “This is the first time we’ve really had the capability to go someplace, stop, take a detailed look, spend our time there and then leave.”
