The nation made history during the presidential election on Nov. 20 by sending Barack Obama to the White House. The first-ever black president will take his oaths of office on Tuesday, Jan. 20—the day after Martin Luther King Day. Supporters who can’t make it to Washington, D.C., can celebrate at a number of inaugural events in the area. The inauguration ceremony in Washington is scheduled to begin around noon. Here’s a brief roundup of some of the parties, balls and meetings being held around the region on or near Inauguration Day.

• Blue Mermaid Island Grill in Portsmouth will host The Bush Bash on Monday, Jan. 19, celebrating Obama’s inauguration with pop culture trivia and music. The trivia runs from 7 to 9 p.m. in the restaurant at 409 The Hill, and live music will follow from The Mangobamas beginning at 9:30 p.m. Ten percent of proceeds from the evening will be donated to the (H)EAT campaign, supplying heating oil and food to Seacoast residents in need. Call 603-427-2583.

• The Portsmouth Democrats are hosting two events on Inauguration Day. A midday potluck will be held to watch the inauguration live, and an evening gathering will celebrate the new administration. Check www.portsmouthdemocrats.org for updates on the location and time.

• The Concord Monitor and the Capitol Center for the Arts will host a free communal viewing of the inauguration on the big screen in The Chubb Theatre, 44 S. Main St., Concord, on Tuesday, Jan. 20 at 10 a.m. All are welcome and may arrive at any time. No tickets are required. Café lunch items from The Common Man will be available for purchase in The Governor’s Hall. Visit www.ccanh.com or call 603-225-1111.

• The Currier Museum of Art at 150 Ash St. in Manchester will host an inauguration reception on Tuesday, Jan. 20 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Lunch will be provided as guests watch the inauguration and participate in a discussion led by professors from area institutions. Visitors can also check out the museum collections. Proceeds from the $125 ticket fee will benefit the Court Appointed Special Advocates of New Hampshire on behalf of abused and neglected children. Call 603-626-4600 or 603-695-8501.

• The New Hampshire Democratic Party will host an Inauguration Day Luncheon at Red River Theatres at 11 S. Main St., Concord, at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 20. Tickets are $15 for a buffet lunch provided by Hermanos Cocina Mexicana and a televised swearing-in and inaugural address in the large cinema. (This event is sold out.)

• Portsmouth Public Library will televise the Inauguration Day events in the Levenson Room from 11:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Guests are invited to stay for a few minutes or for the entire free event. Visit www.cityofportsmouth.com/library or call 603-427-1540. The library is at 175 Parrott Ave., Portsmouth.

• The Music Hall at 28 Chestnut St. in Portsmouth will screen a live high definition broadcast of the inauguration on Tuesday, Jan. 20, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Guests are encouraged to bring food contributions to be distributed by The Salvation Army. Visit www.themusichall.org or call 603-436-2400. (This event is sold out.)

• The Press Room in Portsmouth will host an inauguration hoot night on Tuesday, Jan. 20 at 9 p.m., with music from The Leftist Marching Band. Dubbed the “End of an Error Bash,” the event may also feature other musical performances, as well as some spoken word and trivia. The free bash will take place upstairs at 77 Daniel St., Portsmouth, 603-431-5186.

• Le Club Boutique and Choozy Shooz will host the Seacoast Inaugural Ball at 41 Vaughan Mall in Portsmouth on Friday, Jan. 23, from 7 p.m. to midnight.
