When Portsmouth’s RiverRun Bookstore moves from its current location at 7 Commercial Alley to a more prominent location on Congress Street on Thursday, Sept. 7, passersby might see people carry and pass boxes upon boxes as the store’s entire inventory is moved by a book brigade through Market Square.

Tom Holbrook, co-owner and manager of the store, recently approached the City Council for approval for the project, inspired by similar undertakings in other places. Seventy-five people from the community have already confirmed that they’re willing to join the line. “We just asked our customers,” Holbrook said.

The City Council approved of the idea in a vote of 9-0 at their meeting on Aug. 21, and passed the idea to the city manager for final approval.

Holbrook hopes to hold the brigade from 5 to 8 p.m. The new store will open Saturday, Sept. 9, if everything goes smoothly. At 1,500 square feet, it will be slightly larger than the old location, which is 1,000 square feet.

Holbrook is not abandoning his spot on Commercial Alley, however. The space will become a used bookstore, called Second RiverRun, expected to open at the end of September.
