Pro Portsmouth seeks community support | Print |  E-mail

Long ago in a place that seems very far away, someone came up with the idea to create a grassroots not-for-profit to promote the vibrant arts, culture, history and community of Portsmouth. Since forming in 1977, Pro Portsmouth has channeled that energy into Market Square Day, Children’s Day, First Night Portsmouth and Summer in the Street.

In order to sustain their mission, the organization is now asking the community for support. Specifically, they’re looking for $30,000.

“This is not a membership drive,” explains executive director Barbara Massar in a press release. “We have not been, and do not intend to become, membership-driven. The ‘$30K for 30’ Appeal is a voluntary ask. Because the strength of Pro Portsmouth has always been its inclusive community nature, we’re hoping the community will give back in that same spirit.”

In its early years, the group received funding from the state, like many other organizations in New Hampshire working to support their central business district. That money dried up after a few years, and since then the organization has depended primarily on sponsorships and donations from area businesses to support expenses and administration. The first-ever fundraising drive, described as an annual appeal, will help support the organization’s operating costs.

To donate, contact Liz Rubin at 603-610-5530. For more information on the group, including volunteer and sponsorship opportunities, visit www.proportsmouth.org.
