The Greater Dover Chamber of Commerce will host a forum for candidates aiming to represent the 1st District in U.S. Congress and District 3 on the N.H. Executive Council. The breakfast forum will take place Wednesday, Oct. 25, from 7:15 to 9:15 a.m. at the Cochecho Country Club, 245 Gulf Road, Dover. Admission is $12 for Chamber members and $15 for non-members and includes breakfast. Pre-registration is required. Call 603-742-2218 by Thursday, Oct. 20, or register online at www.dovernh.org.
The event marks an expansion of the Chamber’s series of forums for candidates for Dover City Council and Dover School Board. The 1st District seat is currently held by Republican Jeb Bradley, of Wolfeboro. His challenger in this election is Democrat Carol Shea-Porter, of Rochester.
The retirement of longtime Executive Councilor Ruth Griffin of Portsmouth has opened that seat to a race between Republican Chuck Morse, of Salem, and Democrat Bev Hollingworth, of Hampton.
N.H. has five executive councilors, each representing approximately one-fifth of the state’s population and elected every two years, concurrent with the governor. Also known as the Governor’s Council, they administer the affairs of the state, approving the spending of a major portion of the approximately $3.9 billion that is appropriated annually by the Legislature. The Executive Council also confirms some gubernatorial appointments, including commissioners, deputy commissioners and assistant commissioners. They also confirm District, Superior and Supreme Court justices, medical referees and military officers.
For more information on the forum, call the Greater Dover Chamber of Commerce at 603-742-2218 or visit www.dovernh.org.
