During the Big Band Era of the 1930s, swing was king. Large ensembles of jazz musicians led by the likes of Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller performed for crowds who danced feverishly to the new style.
Seacoast residents have a chance to relive that era every month at the Union Bluff Hotel & Meeting House in York, Maine. The New Legacy Swing Band will take the stage on the third Thursday of each month through June, beginning on Jan. 21. Guests are invited to come early for dinner and then hit the dance floor starting at 7 p.m.
The New Legacy Swing Band is a 15-piece ensemble that demonstrates a classic big band sound, complete with five saxophones, three trumpets, three trombones and a bona fide jazz singer. Based on the Seacoast, the band has been active since the early 1990s and has a repertoire of more than 450 songs. They’ll play a mix of swing, jazz and Latin dance numbers at York Beach.
Swing dances will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. on Jan. 21, Feb. 18, March 18, April 15, May 20 and June 17 at the Union Bluff Hotel, 8 Beach St., York Beach, Maine, 207-363-1333.
