“It’s people invested in the success of our town as the cultural capital of New Hampshire,” says Margaret Talcott of The Music Hall, defining the new collaboration among area venues to promote the Seacoast as a choice destination. The Seacoast Music Collaborative, spearheaded by Peter Hamelin of The Stone Church, Margaret Talcott of The Music Hall, and Dave Karlotski of The Wire, wants to make the Seacoast known regionally and perhaps nationally as a music destination. The organization met at The Press Room on June 27 to launch their new brochure, currently available at rest areas throughout southern New Hampshire, and talk about their next steps. Venues participating in the widespread effort include The Hampton Beach Casino, The Music Hall, The Muddy River Smokehouse, The Press Room, Redhook Brewery, The Barley Pub, The Blue Mermaid, The Dolphin Striker, Dover Soul, The Governor’s Inn, Harbor’s Edge at the Sheraton Harborside, Isles of Shoals Steamship Co., Mill Pond Center for the Arts, Powow River Grille, Prescott Park Arts Festival, The Red Door, Seacoast Guitar Society, Three Chimneys Inn, The Dover Brick House, The Rochester Opera House, Slim’s Tex-Mex, The Stone Church and The Ioka Theater. SMC’s first step was to publish and distribute 15,000 color brochures, through the Greater Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce and with a grant from the state Division of Travel and Tourism, that will be distributed in Boston and Seacoast region hotels, as well as restaurants, rest areas and chambers of commerce. At their meeting on June 27, the group discussed ways to build the group’s Web site. There’s also talk of creating special events, or collaborating on certain nights, annually or monthly, to offer enticements for people to go see live music in local venues. It was pointed out that the region is already home to many national acts, and the music community itself has spawned a number of unique grassroots events in the last two years that have drawn national attention, including Jazzmouth and the RPM Challenge. The upcoming Busk Till Dusk event in Portsmouth on Saturday, July 22, has the potential to draw similar attention.
