Guests at Rock My Soul’s fourth annual spring concert at the First Parish Federated Church in South Berwick will not only hear a gospel performance from a 25-member choir, but will take part in the first concert being recorded for the group’s upcoming live disc. The show on Saturday, May 31, will be the first in a series of concerts featured on the “Rock My Soul Live CD,” which is slated for release this fall.
Rock My Soul is a nondenominational choral ensemble that performs roots-based gospel music with lush vocal harmonies. A full instrumental band will accompany the choir, with Brett Hartenbach on guitar, Eric Donnelly on keyboards, Victor Love on bass and Joe Rogers on drums. Vocal solos will be performed by Hartenbach, Deb Erickson-Irons, Carolyn Morse-Finn, Mark Weaver, Janice Yancy and Rock My Soul founder/director Dawn Boyer.
The choir is part of the Gospel Music Project, a nonprofit, interfaith organization dedicated to educating people about the history and culture that surrounds American gospel music. The organization strives to convey an uplifting and unifying message of hope, strength and joy.
Since forming four years ago, Rock My Soul has performed throughout New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Maine and has earned praise for its soulful and authentic revival of the gospel tradition. Between songs, choir members tell the stories behind the traditional tunes, deepening the audience’s understanding of gospel’s rich heritage. According to Boyer, the group decided to record a live album in order to capture its rousing energy and spirit onstage.
Tickets are $6 in advance, $8 at the door, free for children age 12 and under. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the concert begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at all Bull Moose Music locations and can be purchased by visiting www.gospelmusicproject.org or calling 207-439-9968. Advance tickets are recommended. First Parish Federated Church is located at 150 Main St., South Berwick, Maine.
