Melvern and His Fabulous Meltones played to a mostly subdued but attentive crowd on Saturday, May 20, at The Blue Mermaid. Taylor’s understated stage presence and dry humor is charming and befitting one who plays an instrument like a ukulele.
Listeners were treated to the band’s Hawaiian Isle-meets-hipster groove, with a bunch of songs about drinking in Lowell, drinking in Salisbury, and even a song intended to be played at weddings (hopefully with an open bar). All were played with a pop sensibility and accessibility that Tiny Tim was never able to get out of a uke, with wonderful backing vocals by the rest of the band. A rhythm section comprised of Johnny Grant on bass and Sir Bob Nash on drums played about as tight as you will find in any band. Rounding out the tropical flavor was Dave Livingston’s guitar, primarily played with a slide, which filled any imaginable gap in the performance.
In the unfortunate event that you missed this show, the band is hoping to return within a month and this time they will be armed with a brand new re-release of their disc “Fabuloso.” The disc will be backed by Platform One Entertainment, a high powered management company out of Chicago (the same that’s working with soon-to-be-super-huge band As Fast As). Look for it to make a big splash on the local scene and beyond.
Don’t miss a second chance to buy “Fabuloso” and don’t miss your next chance to see Melvern and His Fabulous Meltones live. |
