Aloud at the Muddy River, March 5, 2009 | Print |  E-mail

The four members of Boston-based indie rock band Aloud seemed undeterred by the evening’s obstacles. The band was supposed to split sets with Portland, Maine’s The Cambiata, who canceled at the last minute due to illness. The room in the basement of The Muddy River was mostly empty on this winter weeknight, with a row of attentive patrons dotting the bar. But the low turnout didn’t stop Aloud from spinning the adrenaline dial all the way to max.

The band is led by dual vocalists/guitarists Henry Beguiristain and Jen de la Osa, who have been collaborating as songwriters since their early teens. Behind the two leads are bassist Ryan Majoris and drummer Jonathan Schmidt. During their hour-long set, the group performed several songs from its sophomore album, “Fan the Fury,” released early last year on the band’s own Lemon Merchant Records.

The four band members demonstrate striking chemistry onstage. Beguiristain occasionally sidles up to Osa to sing into the same microphone, and the pair often meet center-stage to play guitar face to face. Majoris and Schmidt, too, seem to get caught up in their musical collaborations, often grinning at each other when the beat strikes them as particularly satisfying.

The music is raw rock with a hard punk edge to certain tunes, all rooted around a classic Americana core. Each song reflects influences that span the decades from The Beatles to Oasis to The Strokes. Osa’s voice is feminine yet forceful, commanding and confident but also capable of emotional tenderness. She’s able to flip a sonic switch and fill the room with her powerful vocals, and she is probably the single most vital member of the band.

But the other players are also skillful, and Beguiristain and Osa have a musical rapport that only comes with years of collaboration. Their voices blend together smoothly, and so do their guitar styles, with Beguiristain often taking the lead while Osa delivers heavy chords laced with reverb. Both of them also play keyboard, showing surprising dexterity.

At The Muddy River, the band came out of the gates with “Murder Will Out,” off their latest record. The two leads repeated lines like “Back of the line” and “You’ll do your time,” setting an aggressive tone. From the outset, the instrumentalists were highly energetic, and their physical animation increased as they got more comfortable in front of the sparse but appreciative audience.

Other songs from “Fan the Fury” included “Julie,” “The Last Time,” “When the Ants Attack the Queen” and “Backs to the Wall.” The latter song had a slightly political bent, encouraging rebellion against society’s barriers. “I know we can make it fall / If enough have our backs to the wall,” they sang.

A highlight of the show was the band’s deft cover of The Beatles’ “Helter Skelter,” instantly recognizable by its discordant opening guitar riff. Osa sang lead vocals, and Beguiristain executed a spot-on replication of the short but oh-so-sweet mid-song guitar solo. It was a nice fit for the band’s fiery style, at once jubilant and furious.

Aloud released its first EP, “The Sooner it Comes,” in 2004, and followed it up with a full-length album, “Leave Your Light On,” in 2006. The group has performed throughout the Northeast, as well as the Midwest and Southeast. “Fan the Fury” was produced by former Sony engineer Chuck Brody, who has also worked with Yoko Ono and the Wu Tang Clan, among others. Songs from the latest disc have received airplay on college radio stations across the nation.
