Rochester takes another turn for the sophisticated this month with the addition of a city poet laureate. A celebration to honor Jennifer Lynn White will be held Saturday, March 19. The celebration, which will be held in the main gallery at Artstream surrounded by work inspired by a visit to Tuscany, will include poetry readings from Jennifer White, Leslie Snow, John-Michael Albert, Neil English and Pat Frisella, with a special Italian performance by Andrew Periale of Perry Ally Theater. Artstream, the Poetry Society of New Hampshire and the City of Rochester will host the celebration. They, among others, worked for several years to create the post. The evening of poetry, puppetry and fine art starts at 7 p.m. at Artstream, 56 North Main St. Refreshments will be served, and everyone is welcome. Ten poems by New Hampshire high school students will be going on to the Manningham Contest, sponsored by the National Federation of State Poetry Societies. The winners of the 2004-2005 Poetry Society of New Hampshire High School Student Poetry Contest are Allegra Hyde of Peterborough, a student at ConVal Regional High School; Laura C. Reynolds of Concord, a student at Concord High School; Leah Salloway of Durham, a student at Oyster River High School; and Denica Swanson of Lincoln, a student at Lin-Wood High School. These poems will also be published in an upcoming issue of The Poets Touchstone, which is published by the Poetry Society of New Hampshire. The judge for this year's contest was Robert Crawford, assistant professor in the Writing Department of Chester College of New England and a published poet. |
