The North Hampton Library is offering Playaway, “the first self-playing digital audio book, with six to 24 hours of listening content pre-loaded into a package about half the size of a deck of cards,” according to a recent press release. There are no cassettes, no CDs and no downloads; just plug in your headphones to the 2-ounce device, and you can enjoy a complete book, ranging from six to 24 hours of play time.

Batteries are included in the packaging, and each Playaway has an attached lanyard, so you can wear it around your neck for hands-free listening. It accepts any standard headphones, or you can purchase a pair of your own from the library for $1.

The library’s Playaway collection features bestsellers, fiction and nonfiction, and is available for two-week borrowing, just as with any other library book.
