On Tuesday, June 12, at 7 p.m., there will be a special showing of the documentary “Mondays at Skimmilk Farm: 30 Years of Writers at Work” in the Levenson Room of the Portsmouth Public Library. After the film, New York/New Hampshire based filmmaker Ken Browne will discuss the making of this half-hour documentary, which celebrates the life of workshop founder and poet Jean Pedrick (1922-2006) and the writers who participated in the long-lived literary workshop at her family farm in Brentwood.
The film premiered on New Hampshire Public Television in April, which was National Poetry Month. This will be the first public screening. The free event is sponsored by the Portsmouth Poet Laureate Program, RiverRun Books and the Portsmouth Public Library.
Marie Harris (N.H. poet laureate, 1999-2004); former Portsmouth poets laureate John Perrault and Mimi White; current Portsmouth poet laureate Elizabeth Knies; and other workshop members, including Charles Pratt, Pat Parnell, Katherine Solomon, Kathi Hennessy, Ellen Hersh, Nancy Carr and Julie Bigg Veazey will be on-hand to talk about the experience of being in the workshop.
“Mondays at Skimmilk Farm” is currently in initial stages of a national release through American Public Television. The film’s focus is the writing process and the bonds created when the process is shared among writers who support each other. Grammy nominated Borealis Wind Quintet provides the score and N.H. Public Radio’s Laura Knoy narrates.
Ken Browne’s other New Hampshire-inspired documentaries include the recently released 75th anniversary film tribute to the League of N.H. Craftsmen, “A League of Our Own: New Hampshire and the American Craft Movement.” His 2001 film, “Four Hands, One Heart,” about N.H. potters Ed and Mary Scheier, has been aired nationally on public television.
