Though the Rochester Hoot at the Busy Bean had to fold its tent in 2006, many of the orphaned poets have found a new home.
Café on the Corner, at 478 Central Ave., is taking the “every fourth Wednesday” slot in the area formerly occupied by the Rochester Hoot. Matt Gallant and John-Michael Albert will continue to co-host it.
The next show takes place Wednesday, Dec. 27. Featured poets are the Blood on the Floor Slam Team, which includes Albert, Gallant, Ayanna Morris, Mike Nelson and Tim Veilleux. The feature will be followed by an open mike.
“They’ll be doing the ‘wedding thing’—something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue. Each will present two of their own works (old and new), a work by another member of the group (borrowed) and then there will be an extended group poem to which each has contributed (as well as several famous poets) entitled ‘Mid-Winter’,” Albert says.
The Rochester Hoot folded during the summer when the host Busy Bean Café closed its doors in the face of a rent spike.
“I for one will really miss it. We were so welcome there and it just felt right—attested to by the 15-20 people who came every month, including a hefty number of listeners,” says Albert. Most of the people they were attracting in Rochester were from Dover and beyond, so Dover made a logical central in which to reconvene. “We’ve always wanted to do something in Dover kind of halfway between the blue haired ladies reading rhymed and metered poetry about flowers in the church reception area and wildly unpredictable slam poetry,” Albert says.
The Café on the Corner performance schedule for 2007 continues with Kingswood (High School) Writers and Gordon Lang on Jan. 24; the Timberland (High School) Writers and Matt Gallant on Feb. 28; Sarah Anderson and George Jack on March 28; Pat Parnell and Dudley Laufman on April 25; Lesley Kimball and Neil English on May 23; Annie Farnsworth and Dennis Camire on June 27; Marita O’Neill and Duff Plunkett on July 25; and a special appearance by Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman on Aug. 22.
