American Independence Museum hosts authors

The American Independence Museum is hosting three writers with different perspectives on the Revolutionary era through a new lecture series at Exeter’s historic Folsom Tavern.

The series begins on Wednesday, June 17, with author Alan R. Hoffman discussing “Lafayette in America, 1824 and 1825.” He is the translator of a journal by Lafayette’s private secretary, which documented the general’s farewell tour.

On June 24, Nancy Rubin Stuart will introduce a little known figure who witnessed some of the most important events of the American Revolution. Stuart’s latest book, “The Muse of the Revolution: The Secret Pen of Mercy Otis Warren and the Founding of the Nation,” features one of the “founding mothers” of American independence who was a playwright, poet and historian.

Both events will take place in the assembly room of the Folsom Tavern at 164 Water St. in Exeter at 7 p.m. There is no admission fee and reservations are not required. The authors will have their works available for sale following each event.

The third “Conversation with the Author” will take place in November, as Maureen Taylor, television’s “Photo Detective” will discuss her history mystery solving techniques and soon to be published book, “The Last Muster: Photographs and Stories from the American Revolution.” Taylor, author of numerous magazine articles and books, discovered that some Revolutionary figures lived into the advent of photography in the 1840s.

Following Taylor’s presentation, she will be available for personal photo consultations to help people find clues about their ancestors’ lives. More details will be available as the event nears.

free writing and publishing workshop at Jabberwocky

Aspiring authors looking for tips on how to find the right publishing company and develop a strong marketing plan are invited to attend a free workshop at Jabberwocky Bookshop in Newburyport, Mass., on Friday, June 12.

The workshop will be led by publicists Deidre Randall and Skye Wentworth, who will discuss publishing options and marketing strategies for authors. Randall is CEO of independent publishing company Peter E. Randall Publisher and literary marketing firm Blueline Publicity. Wentworth is the head of Skye Wentworth Public Relations, a firm that specializes in promoting books and music.

Both publicists stress the important role of independent publishers in today’s literary climate. Small publishers have more flexibility, more direct ways of reaching audiences and work more closely with authors than large companies, they say. Randall and Wentworth will also present traditional and nontraditional ways of getting media coverage for books.

The event begins at 7 p.m. at Jabberwocky Bookshop at the Tannery, 50 Water St., Newburyport, Mass., 978-465-9359. For more information, visit www.perpublisher.com, www.bluelinepublicity.com or www.skyewentworth.org.
