It was just a sandwich—salami, provolone, thinly sliced onions and peppers, tomatoes, dill pickles and olives spilling out of a sandwich roll. But with “Moe’s Original,” Phil “Moe” Pagano brought bliss to countless lives throughout his tenure as owner of Moe’s Italian Sandwich Shops. The Massachusetts resident bought his first shop in 1959 from the former owner, and eventually bequeathed a dozen replicas to the rest of southern New Hampshire and Maine through his MadMoe Corporation franchising business, ultimately adding turkey, ham and tuna options to the menu. But it’s his original sandwich and his first store on Daniel Street, still run by the family, that placed him in Portsmouth’s heart. That was evidenced last summer when more than a thousand people turned out for his big birthday bash, helping him usher in his 90th decade. Pagano passed away just after midnight on Tuesday, May 16.
