Bob Kraft Sr. of Kittery started selling clams in his mother’s backyard. Fifty years later, the restaurant he started, Bob’s Clam Hut on Route 1 in Kittery, Maine, will celebrate its 50th anniversary. On Saturday and Sunday, June 24 and 25, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the restaurant will celebrate with special food, raffles and children’s activities. Kraft, who died of cancer three years ago this week, sold the business after 30 years to Michael Landgarten in 1986. Landgarten continues to use many of the same recipes created by founder Robert Kraft Sr. but has introduced some of his own menu items to the ranks of lobster rolls and fresh fried seafood, added Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream, and introduced Bob’s to the virtual world at www.bobsclamhut.com. Bob’s has been recognized for its contributions to the community, working closely with Fair Tides homelessness program and Footprints food pantry in Kittery, as well as Share our Strength’s Taste of the Nation event in Portsmouth. In 2004, Bob’s won the state of Maine’s Volunteerism Award for Small Businesses. Landgarten’s new restaurant across the street, Robert’s Maine Grill and Market, will celebrate its grand opening on June 15, starting with a parade from Bob’s Clam Hut at 10:30 a.m. Kittery’s own Gary Sredzienski, a nationally renowned accordion virtuoso, will lead the parade. The celebration continues with an open house for the rest of the day. |
