the plot: Paul Callan (Ulrich), a former seminary student, traded in his holy orders for a gig investigating potential miracles for the Boston Archdiocese. Paul's about to call it quits when he's assigned to investigate young Tommy Ferguson (Jacob Smith), a 10-year-old boy who seemingly can heal the sick and return sight to the blind. When Paul is involved in a horrendous car accident, Tommy uses his healing powers to save him, then later dies. During the accident, Paul sees a pool of his blood suddenly form the words "God is now here." The cryptic message forces Paul to re-evaluate his career with the church and leads him to Alva Keel (Macfadyen), a fellow supernatural investigator who knows a lot more about Paul than he's letting on. Along with ex-cop Evelyn Santos (Ramirez), the three follow a trail of unexplainable events across the country. The journey takes on added meaning for Paul when he discovers others who have seen strange things written in their blood.

why it's good: Miracles was television gold for the six-weeks it was on ABC in 2003. It's just too bad hardly anyone saw it. Breaking news from the war in Iraq and almost no promotional support from ABC meant that "Miracles" was pre-empted and shuffled around the schedule before it was ultimately tossed into the scrap heap with seven episodes unaired. But thanks to the, ahem, miracle of DVD, you can relive the series in all its spooky glory. Ulrich's Paul Callan is the spiritual heir to Fox Mulder from "The X-Files," a sorrowful believer forced into cynical skepticism after one too many fake-outs. Macfadyen is the hidden star of the show, though, a didactic grump who always gets the funniest lines. The 13-episodes on Shout Factory's DVD release of "Miracles" are all solid, with stand-outs including "The Friendly Skies," about a commercial airline that vanishes and reappears seconds later, and "You Are My Sunshine," in which Paul and his ex-girlfriend are possessed by some murderous spirits.

why you should own it: If you miss "The X-Files" or you're hankering for some apocalyptic drama, Miracales is your best bet. The DVD set includes all 13-episodes of the show along with deleted scenes, promos and commentary by series co-creator Richard Hatem.
