I wasn't sure what to expect from the 2005 remake of John Carpenter's 1976 film Assault on Precinct 13. On the surface, it had the potential to be an action-packed film. Crime warlord Marion Bishop (Laurence Fishburne) is captured by police and sent, along with several other prisoners, to an understaffed police precinct on the verge of being shut down. Bishop is actually ready to expose a network of corrupt cops in the city, but the dirty cops surround Precinct 13, ready to kill Bishop and everyone inside to cover up their misdeeds. Sergeant Jake Roenick (Ethan Hawke) must rally the police and criminals inside to defend themselves against the relentless onslaught of killers outside.

Despite the incredibly bad acting, gratuitous language and violence and contrived storyline, I actually watched the entire movie. Not because I thought it was good, but because it was so terrible I was rooting for the bad guys to win. It was like watching a car wreck. You know it's going to be bad, but you sit transfixed, watching the body count pile-up and wondering why Fishburne ever agreed to do this movie. I mean, the guy was Morpheus, for crying out loud!

Assault isn't bad for an action movie, though it's made more appealing for rental thanks to a ton of bonus features on the DVD. Deleted scenes have optional commentaries by director Jean-Francois Richet, explaining why they were cut, but his accent is so thick you'll have a hard time understanding him. There's also optional commentary by Richet, writer James DeMonaco and producer Jeffrey Silver.

The most interesting bonus features on the disc are the five featurettes. The action is the best part of the movie, so it follows that the best of the featurettes are "Behind Precinct Walls" and "Plan of Attack." In "Behind Precinct Walls," production designer Paul Asterberry talks about the creation of the set, covering all the different set pieces and how they came together to form the complete Precinct 13 building. In "Plan of Attack," stunt coordinator Steve Lucescu discusses how they set up stunts and trained the actors for their action scenes. "Armed and Dangerous" is a throw-away featurette with weapon's specialist Charles Taylor talking about how he chose weapons to fit the characters' personalities. "Caught in the Crosshairs" and "The Assault Team" are your basic behind-the-scenes featurettes, with the latter focusing on director Richet.
