As Dover becomes a more desirable place to live, how can
the city keep it an affordable place for low-income residents?
Through responsible spending. Part of the issue with
increased taxes over the last few years has been increased property values. The
goods news is that property values are up, but they’ve leveled off.
What have you accomplished for Dover that you are most
proud of and what would you like to accomplish if you are elected?
I’ve never served on the City Council, but part of my
accomplishments is I’m a 17-year veteran of Dover Fire and Rescue. I retired as
a lieutenant. Prior to that service I worked for the recreation and arena
divisions. I’ve coached for the city of Dover in many capacities. I’ve spent a
lifetime trying to volunteer in the community.
What is an important environmental issue facing Dover?
There is a couple. One of the most important is continuing
to research the Tolend Landfill area. From an environmental standpoint, that’s
a priority in Dover.
What is the most recent cultural or artistic event that
you have attended in Dover?
The Cocheco Arts Festival and the concerts down in the park
this summer.
What type of new businesses would you like to see come to
Dover?
I’m into variety, honestly. But there are two categories:
internal, downtown businesses including retail, restaurants and mixed use and
then there is light industrial for those areas of town that have been designated
for those type of businesses. Industrial businesses get taxes and don’t cost
the city much. .
Do you support a tax cap for Dover?
I’m willing to serve under whatever the voters decide at the
poles.
Dover has a growing art community. What can the city do to
support arts and artists?
The Arts Commission is a great start. We have a
variety of people that have that interest. But to have more for the arts you
have to create an interest. People have a willingness to go elsewhere for the
arts, but you have to create an interest here and say that is something we can
do within our own boundaries. Like everything else, it all starts with grass
roots.
