meet the mill artists in Dover

The Galleries at One Washington Center will feature a month-long “Who’s Who in the Mill” event beginning Saturday, Feb. 7.
During the past couple of months, several new artists have moved into the building and joined the Dover Mill Arts Collaborative, said gallery curator Daisy Adams, a painter. The show will introduce the new artists and also feature some previously existing tenants in the Picker Building.

There are now more than 20 artists in the mill, nine of whom will participate in the show. Each artist will display one piece that represents their work, along with a brief biography and description of their art, and contact information.

In her artist statement, illustrator and painter Gretchen Hatfield calls Dover “a comfortable, lively, friendly and art-conscious town full of promise.” She moved to the city last fall.

In addition to Adams and Hatfield, the show will feature painter and Creative Spirit Art Studio owner Caryn Duncan; painter and printmaker Deloris White; contemporary couture quilt maker Alix Dworkin; painter Nick Ellard; watercolor painter Ann Larkey; jeweler and Sierra Designs owner Michele Gregoire; and woodworker Brinton Shone.

The event runs through March 7. The Galleries at One Washington Center are on the third floor of the Picker Building in Dover, www.onewashingtoncenter.com.

design your own BaileyWorks bag

Local bag maker BaileyWorks will again partner with the ellO Gallery & Shop in Portsmouth for the second annual BaileyWorks Art Project.

Regional artists are invited to put their creative imprint on BaileyWorks’ signature 253 Courier Bags. Fifteen artists will be selected based on their proposals and examples of past work.

Completed bags will be shown during the month of April at the ellO Gallery, with an opening reception to be held the evening of Friday, April 3. Finished bags will be available for sale to the public during the show.

Additionally, several bags will be selected for reproduction as limited edition art project bags at BaileyWorks—to be sold at BaileyWorks.com and in the company’s factory store. A percentage of the profits from limited edition bag sales will be donated to a local food pantry.

The bag must be used in the work. It can be customized and remain fully useable or rendered unrecognizable. For instance, last year, ellO co-owner Byrdy DiLando designed a hat, dress and handbag using one BaileyWorks bag, while co-owner John Fanning created an abstract sculpture with pieces of another bag. Most bags, however, remained intact. Bags from the 2008 project can be viewed on Flickr from www.bailyworks.com/home/bagcommunity.html.

Brief project proposals, along with one or two electronic images of past work, should be e-mailed to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it no later than Monday, Feb. 9. Include a link to an online portfolio or Web site if available.
Artists will be chosen and notified by Monday, Feb. 16. The unbranded Bailey bags will be made available to the artists on Friday, Feb. 20. Artists will have until Monday, March 23, to complete their bags.

For more information, call BaileyWorks at 603-430-9577 or ellO Gallery at 603-433-9110.
