The holiday season has become so commercialized, it’s enough to make a person fold his wallet and say “bah, humbug!” But, what can you do? People expect presents. The eighth annual Women’s Holiday Art Sale in South Berwick, Maine, offers a bevy of non-traditional arts and crafts—a refreshing alternative to the pre-packaged products that most people will receive this year.

A total of 22 artists and craftswomen will sell their wares from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 30, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1, in the South Berwick Town Hall auditorium. Thirty percent of this year’s featured artists are new to the event, which is the foundation of the Home for the Holidays downtown celebration.

The eclectic gifts that visitors can expect to find include funky aprons made out of vintage patterns, hand-painted banners, albums from local musicians and other goods. “My goal is to diversify the offerings so that people don’t get bored and they can see something new each year,” said Jess Moore, chair of the art sale.

The event will also benefit a number of local non-profits through the sale and raffle of different goods. Two massage therapists are offering their services in exchange for a donation to benefit the Great Works Regional Land Trust. The South Berwick Friends of the Library will raffle two handmade quilts to benefit the library. The Old Berwick Historical Society will sell local goods to raise money for its mission. And the local Girl Scouts troop will accept donations for a food bank.

In its first five years of existence, the Women’s Art Sale operated out of a barn. But, three years ago, it moved to Town Hall. It also linked up with the Smart Growth South Berwick Organization, which promotes the local economy and sensible development. “The Art Sale predated that movement, but has enveloped it completely. It’s been encouraged by the fact that people are trying to buy local. They can come and get a majority of their Christmas shopping done without ever leaving the community,” Moore said.

The Home for the Holidays celebration has grown to include several family events, like cookie decorating and a visit from Santa Claus. Also, local shops from South Berwick to Rollinsford keep their doors open late. But the art sale remains the backbone of the evening.

“The art sale drives that night,” Moore said.
