Artstream Gallery in Rochester is accepting submissions for an unusual juried exhibit in February. Fifty percent of proceeds from sales of items in the “Lovely Hearts” exhibition will go toward the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The other half of the proceeds will go to the artists, although some artists plan to donate their work to the cause, as well.
The inspiration for the show came from a former gallery intern who, with her two sisters, created a line of jewelry, called “Betty’s Jewels,” with the sole purpose of raising money for breast cancer research.
“We decided to do something we felt was significant for women everywhere and to celebrate Mattie and her sisters’ dedication to charitable works,” says gallery co-owner Susan Schwake-Larochelle. “We also wished to stay true to our mission and encourage emerging artists and include artisans from around the world.”
Artstream is accepting submissions through Jan. 22. Artists may submit up to three works, along with a fee of $10 to help cover the jury process. All work must be sized less than 8 by 10 inches and priced under $100.
“We are encouraging non traditional fine arts as well as outsider art and student works. Nothing need be framed,” says Schwake-Larochelle in the call for submissions. The gallery is looking for diversity, both student and professional work in traditional media such as painting, printing, paper arts, and sculpture, and in less traditional fine art media. such as textiles of any sort (quilting, needlework, etc.); felting, knitting or crochet; mixed media; jewelry; recycled art; photographic work; digital media; and book arts.
An online submission form is available at www.artstreamstudios.com.
The opening reception for “Lovely Hearts” will be held on Saturday, Feb. 10 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., with cocktails and chocolate to enjoy. All works will be also represented in the Artstream online gallery starting that afternoon at 5 p.m.
